On the morning of October 5th, 2018, in Hanoi, the Steering Committee for the 2017 Economic Census held a conference to summarize this Census. Mr. Nguyen Van Trung – Deputy Minister of Ministry of Planning and Investment – attended and chaired the conference.
Participating in this conference were representatives of leaders of People’s Committees of some provinces and centrally-run cities; representatives of ministries, line-ministries; on the GSO’s side, Mr. Nguyen Bich Lam – Director General of GSO, Standing Deputy Head of the Central Steering Committee for the Economic Census; leadership of the GSO; leaders of units under the GSO who are members of the Central Steering Committee for the Census and the Standing Team assisting the Central Census Steering Committee; Directors of Provincial Statistical Offices of 63 provinces and centrally-run cities who are Deputy Heads of Provincial Steering Committees for Census; representatives of Chiefs of Bureaus under Provincial Statistical Offices; and press agencies.
This is the fifth time that GSO plays the role of a standing body to organize the implementation of the Economic Census over the country. The results of the 2017 Economic Census meet the demand on information of national and international agencies, organizations and individuals. The Economic
Census has fulfilled the goals, requirements and contents assigned in the Prime Minister’s Decision No. 1672/QD-TTg dated August 26th, 2016. The Census has collected, processed, aggregated a large amount of information about: (1) Number and operating results of enterprises and cooperatives; (2) Number and operating results of non-farm individual business establishments; (3) Number and operating results of administrative units; (4) Number and operating situation of religion institutes. The collected information reflects the real situation and economic picture for five years 2011-2016 with many important achievements.
The Census was implemented with two phases: Phase 1 from March 1st to May 31, 2017: Collecting the information on business establishments belonging to the enterprise sector, branches, representative offices, enterprises and foreign organizations, administrative agencies, establishments of Communist Party, membership organizations, administrative units, foreign non-government organizations licensed for operation in Vietnam. Phase 2 from July 1st – July 30th, 2017: Collecting the information on religion institutes, non-farm individual business establishments.
The GSO announced the preliminary results of the Census on January 19th, 2018. The official data of the Census was made public on September 19th, 2018.
The results of the Census assist the compilation of socio-economic indicators, analysis and forecast of official statistical indicators by socio-economic sectors and fields, gross domestic product, gross regional domestic product, and other statistical indicators in the national account system. The Census’s results are a basis for compiling socio-economic indicators in service of assessing the development in the number of business establishments, administrative units and public service delivery units; at the same time, sketch fully the changes, distribution of business establishments, administrative units and public service delivery units, assist the Government and localities’ authorities in direction and management of implementing socio-economic development goals in line with the Revolution of the National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam and the Congress of the Communist Party at all levels.
